To the Rensselaer Faculty and Rensselaer Community,

As you may be aware, the Constitution of the Faculty Senate requires that the Faculty Handbook – the Rules and Regulations of the faculty - shall be reviewed annually.  This communication will serve to outline the process, and invite your input.

To facilitate the review and revision of the Handbook, the Faculty Senate Executive Committee has established two ad hoc committees, the Faculty Handbook Draft Committee and the Faculty Handbook Review Committee.

The Handbook Draft Committee will review the current handbook, assess diverse input from the faculty and the administration, and draft necessary revisions. The Handbook Review Committee is then charged with reviewing these proposed changes, with an eye towards the interests of our institution and faculty, and advancing a final set of recommendations to the Faculty Senate Executive Committee.

You are invited to review the current Faculty Handbook, available on the Faculty Senate web site (http://facultysenate.rpi.edu/) and to submit comments and suggestions for its revision. Please feel free to contact your Senator or members of the Executive Committee directly. In addition, we have established an e-mail account you may wish to use: (rpifacultyhandbook@gmail.com).  Comments collected from this site will be treated as anonymous.

Upon receiving recommendations from the Handbook Review Committee, the Faculty Senate Executive Committee may seek additional input and propose further revisions, if deemed appropriate and necessary.  The revised Handbook will then be presented to the Faculty Senate, who will review the proposed revisions, and prepare a draft of the revised Handbook for distribution to the faculty. A special General Faculty Meeting will be called to discuss the proposed revised Handbook and gather further input from the faculty. The Faculty Senate will incorporate this input, as appropriate and necessary, into a final revised version of the Handbook, and will vote on this final version.  Ultimately all Handbook revisions require a majority vote of the Faculty Senate, approval by the Provost, and approval by the President and the Board of Trustees.

The Faculty Senate Executive Committee expresses our gratitude to Dr. Angel Garcia and Dr. Bob Linhardt for agreeing to chair the Handbook Draft and Review Committees, respectively. We also express our appreciation of the draft committee members, Curt Breneman, Mike O'Rourke and Faye Duchin and the review committee members, Ricardo Dobry and Peter Fox, for their service.  We look forward to productive community involvement as we move forward on this important project.

This communication also serves a reminder that the Spring General Faculty meeting will be held on April 2, 2013 in the CBIS Auditorium from 3:30 to 5:00 PM.  Provost Prabhat Hajela will be making a presentation at the meeting. We look forward to seeing you there!
